The costs of a kitten
Adopting a British Shorthair kitten is a wonderful experience. If you register a kitten with us, we'll keep you fully informed about the process, from mating and birth to the most wonderful moment for you: picking up your kitten(s).
We often get asked how much it costs to adopt a kitten from us. We certainly understand this question, as it can be a determining factor in your decision. However, we believe it's crucial to know where our kittens will end up in the future. Therefore, we expect you to introduce yourself, tell us where you live, what your family is like, if you have any other pets, and if you're often away from home, for example, for work.
Simply asking for the price isn't enough for us and many other catteries. We believe it's important that people choose our cattery not just for the price, but for our vision and passion for what we do.
Our cats and kittens aren't products you simply buy, but living beings into whom we pour our heart and soul every day. Our cats and kittens grow up freely in our homes, and the same goes for them. So we put a lot of energy into the entire socialization process and, of course, into providing the best possible care!
We don't have a fixed price for all our kittens. The cost of a kitten depends on both the mother and father cat, their pedigree, color, and type.
In addition, as a cattery you also have to deal with inflation and we are unfortunately forced to increase our asking price if costs such as food, care and the vet rise.
Now, we understand that if you're unfamiliar with the cattery world, you might wonder how a certain asking price is determined. For this reason, we'd like to explain everything involved in breeding a litter of kittens.
First of all, starting a cattery naturally costs money. Investing in all the necessary supplies (whelping boxes, kitten pen, medical equipment for the birthing process, etc.) is logical, as is the case with any startup.
Next comes the purchase of a female cat with breeding rights. Because we want to breed with cats with exceptionally good pedigrees, we've imported our cats from other countries. This way, you start with a rare bloodline in your own country, making it easier to pair with the right stud.
For the purchase costs of a cat with breeding rights and a nice pedigree you should think of prices of approximately
€3000,- to €8000,-.
On top of that, there are transportation costs ranging from €400 to €1500.
Naturally, all our cats are tested for HCM, PKD, FIV, FeLV, and their blood type before we allow them to breed. They are then allowed to visit their carefully selected stud.
During our cats' pregnancy, we always have an ultrasound scan done to check that everything is going well.
Towards the end of the pregnancy, an abdominal x-ray is taken. This allows us to count the kittens' skeletons, so we know how many kittens will be born. This way, we know exactly when the labor is complete or whether a kitten might have become stuck in the birth canal, with all the consequences.
of that.
All these health tests, medical appointments, and the service with the stud cat, including travel expenses for dropping off and picking up our cat (sometimes far away), naturally also cost money. Just one service costs anywhere from €500 to €1000.
Once the kittens are born, they stay with us for at least 14 weeks. During this time, they receive high-quality food and all the care they need.
The kittens are also vaccinated twice (at 9 and 12 weeks of age), microchipped, and spayed/neutered. They also receive a European passport and their pedigree.
So when you pick up your kitten(s), you won't have to pay any additional costs. Not even for spaying or neutering. Because we perform this procedure at our own veterinarian, the kittens don't need surgery later in life and can simply acclimate to their new homes in peace and quiet, in perfect health.
Young kittens recover much faster from such a minor procedure than older kittens. This also helps us safeguard the value of their beautiful pedigree and bloodline, and they will never, for any reason, be used for breeding without permission.
Now, the aforementioned costs are the minimum for us as a cattery. This only applies if everything goes smoothly and according to plan, which it usually does. Experience shows, however, that this unfortunately isn't always the case, and unexpected medical expenses can also arise. Think of a sick mother cat, a cesarean section, a sick kitten, a stillbirth, or other issues you'd rather not experience as a cattery.
But that can also be part of it.
Running a cattery is truly a passion! Caring for a large group of cats daily and regularly having kittens at home takes a lot of time, energy, and money. Our adult cats also receive the best care (food, vaccinations, veterinary care, etc.) year-round.
We wouldn't want it any other way, and we feel so much love for our cattery. But don't expect running a cattery to be a good business model, because the opposite is true. And that's perfectly fine with us!
British Shorthairs are known for their friendly and especially calm temperament, and they adapt quickly to any household, even those with children or other animals. These unique qualities make them incredibly beloved and special.
When you buy a British Shorthair kitten, you're getting much more than just a pet. You're getting a new family member who has been raised with love, passion, and care.
The kitten price therefore reflects our dedication and passion as breeders and is largely used to finance our cattery.
As breeders, we also like to stay connected with our kittens and their new owners. We're always here for you!
